This is lesson 6 in Part 1 of my upcoming book, “Engage, Connect, Grow – 52 lessons to guide individuals and corporate teams to the heart of what truly matters to them.” The book is coming out in the Fall of 2017.

For myself, it took me a number of years to realize the biggest thing holding me back from taking action in my life was the belief I needed to acquire something outside myself. I believed a new job, a new car, a new relationship, or more money would solve all my problems.

Below is a journal entry of mine from January 2000 on this topic.

JOURNAL ENTRY JANUARY 2000

Live every moment like it is your last. What has to happen to make this make sense in my
life? Does something have to happen before I make the realization that life really is shorter
than short? A near death experience, a natural disaster, a major accident that is survived, a
loss of a loved one, losing your job, stubbing your toe or biting your lip? What about nothing?
Can nothing happen to make me realize how short my life is? I’m so lucky to be given what I
have, but yet I feel so selfish. I’m not satisfied with what I’ve got. I want more. I want it all or
nothing. I just can’t be satisfied with what I have now. I’m allowing my wants and desires to
get the best of me. I thrive on impulse. Immediate recognition and gratification. Maybe it’s
this or maybe it’s that. It’s definitely something that I need to fix on my own. One cannot live on
desires alone. Those desires will then be the norm and cause new desires to be created and
sought after. Materials are loved by so many. Will they ever love us back? Will they ever not
become old & used? Will they ever remain shiny & new? Will we stop caring for something
that cannot love us back? We are now in love with our possessions. They don’t think or talk
back to us. Unless they are a person who has become someone’s possession. People have
become possessions too. We have all become only  children.
