This is lesson 4 in Part 1 of my upcoming book, “Engage, Connect, Grow – 52 lessons to guide individuals and corporate teams to the heart of what truly matters to them.” The book is coming out in the Fall of 2017.

Who are you really?
Do you find yourself questioning this?

Here is a journal entry of mine from the mid-1990s when I was questioning who I was.

JOURNAL ENTRY MID 1990s
I lie here wide awake thinking,
Thoughts of the future and what it holds,
Seems to be following a straight line with no curve in sight,
Where’s my curve?
I’d enjoy doing something out of the ordinary,
Something unpredicted and spontaneous.
Thinking along a straight line has made me shallow,
Unable to branch out to new and better things.
Am I scared? Probably, why?
Doing the different [thing] is something new,
Meaning a change, an unnatural change.
Who is to change me, myself?
What can’t I break away from the daily routine,
Venture out to find a more fulfilling life?
Is there anything wrong with my life now?
I want to do with my life, no nothing is wrong.
Why do I always worry?
Worrying about the future, what people think, what people say.
What about what I think and what I say?
Expressions, I would not necessarily know in my vocab.
What is that? Scared, worried again?
Time to break away, feel alive, be me,
Who am I?
Why do I question this?
Should I know who I am?
Better than anyone else.
Time for bed.

JOURNAL ENTRY JANUARY 25, 2001

Below are some journal entries—from 2001 and 2007. You may notice I found more clarity over time about who I am.

There are many colours in my life right now,
There are colours that are bright and refreshing,
They are colours that are relaxing and soothing,
They are fun and make me laugh,
They are part of my life and I am glad,
These colours seem to be expanding from time to time,
They are becoming more common around me, everywhere I am,
They are doing too much for me these colours,
They are controlling things with their shimmer and glow,
They do not realize that they don’t have to be in control,
They can let others’ colours take on the battle,
They are friendly, but smart,
They are clever and can be manipulated without realizing it,
They can be orange one day and blue the next day.
I am confident, I am bold,
My life will make sense when I am old,
Goals are important I see that now,
My brain seems tired, it’s hard to say how much info it will allow,
Living everyday like it’s your last is hard to do when you are not having a blast,
Finding true love is what everyone wants,
You can write her a letter in all sorts of fonts,
Then raising a fam that’s not easy today,
Work all day all night for an honest pay,
Life in general seems quite simple,
It’s the day to day that causes the pimples,
Don’t sweat the small stuff and all will be good,
Give me a vacuum to clear my mind and then I could,
It’s those that you bring with you along the way that make the difference,
Friends and family give you strength and they give you guidance
Remember this even if it doesn’t rhyme.
Your mind will be clear, your heart will be strong, you will be fine.
